Gypsy Lore Society

Gypsy Lore Society
United States. Est. 1888. Founder: David McRitchie. It ceased activities in 1892 and was revived in 1907. Current secretary: Thomas Acton. The oldest society for the study of Gypsies. In the early years, few meetings were held, but it published the Journal of the Gypsy Lore Society (JGLS). Members of the newly created U.S. chapter of the society took over its running in the 1980s, and it has since had a substantial number of American members on its Management Committee. In addition to the journal (now called Romani Studies, edited by Yaron Matras), there is a newsletter. Annual conferences are usually held in the United States, but six have taken place in Europe - at Budapest, Florence, Leicester, Leiden, Newcastle, and most recently Granada (2005).
